Manchester United recovered from a humiliating defeat at home to Liverpool to relieve pressure on beleaguered manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and shift the focus on his Tottenham opponent Nuno Espirito Santo.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the driving force behind a strong United performance, which was the ideal answer to last week’s 5-0 thumping at Old Trafford, which raised doubts about Solskjaer’s future.
Ronaldo made things considerably easier for his manager with a stunning far-post volley from Bruno Fernandes’ cross six minutes before the interval, followed by a slide-rule ball to set up Edinson Cavani for a second after 64 minutes.
Spurs, on the other hand, were poor, with Harry Kane scarcely appearing in the game and anger among their supporters, who booed manager Nuno when he substituted Lucas Moura with Steven Bergwijn in the second half.
Spurs supporters exploded in rage at Nuno and their chairman, with cries of “We Want Levy Out” booming across the cavernous stadium as Marcus Rashford closed things up with a fine goal four minutes from time.
Ronaldo saves the day
Ronaldo’s world-class brilliance was on display exactly when Solskjaer and United needed it the most in a game they couldn’t afford to lose.
The Portuguese striker added the flourishes to a United performance that was a great improvement from the disaster against Liverpool, despite the fact that the task was not tough and Spurs were mediocre opponents.
Ronaldo’s mobility posed a continuous danger, and a tremendous shot was called out for offside as United dominated.
For his goal, he displayed brilliant skill before demonstrating the ideal link-up with Cavani to put the Uruguayan in for a typically calm finish that essentially finished the game.
Solskjaer was able to reintroduce Raphael Varane to his defense, joining captain Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in a back three that handled Spurs’ shaky offensive attempts with ease.
And, although it must be remembered that Spurs are not in the same league as Liverpool, it was still a very pleasing 90 minutes for Solskjaer after what had been a traumatic week after Liverpool’s humiliation in front of their own supporters.
It can just be the beginning, with United’s Champions League match against Atalanta in Italy this week and a derby match against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
United and Solskjaer have a long way to go after that Liverpool defeat, but where there is Ronaldo, there is optimism.
This was an outstanding all-around effort and a well-deserved victory.
On just his second Premier League start of the season, Edinson Cavani scored his first goal of the season.
