Deke called O’Neal’s remarks “dumb.” He also said, “I don’t give a damn what the guy’s saying about me,” and added, “I don’t give a damn what the guy’s saying about me.”
On the defensive end, Mutombo has always had a certain savvy about him. But, as proven by his second-most blocked shots in NBA history, he didn’t back down from opposing big men. The claims were made all the more perplexing by the fact that O’Neal had previously forced Deke to have stitches earlier in the series.
Shaq’s comments, if nothing else, seemed to reverse the tide and win him more whistles as the Lakers finished up the series.
For the rest of the series, Shaq had Mutombo in foul trouble.
